During the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to intern at BMO’s Financial Group as a Liquidity Research and Analyst Intern. My role primarily involved working with a team of business analysts, focusing on data preparation and report generation. I was responsible for gathering data from diverse sources such as Netezza and Excel files provided by various departments. I consolidated this information into a single Excel file, which specifically targeted lines of business of interest.
The Excel file I prepared was shared with other team members, and the Power Automate process, already in place for report generation, highlighted critical changes. Additionally, I worked on another project where I collected data from Netezza Database and compiled it into a single Excel file to analyze the trend of retail deposits over time. This analysis facilitated better planning of various business metrics, enabling the bank to adjust strategies accordingly, such as attracting more deposits during declines or adjusting rates when deposits were abundant.
The insights gained from both analyses and process outputs were shared with senior professionals, contributing to a deeper understanding of the data and the actions that a bank might take based on observed trends.
Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to interact with professionals from other departments, including those specialized in capital market trading, quantitative methods, and bond trading markets. These interactions offered valuable insights into how various departments collaborate to maintain liquidity and profitability.
Aside from technical skills, my internship provided essential non-technical takeaways. I learned how to effectively interact with individuals at different levels within the organization and actively seek knowledge from their experiences. Moreover, this internship helped me overcome my introverted nature, enabling me to connect and collaborate with new people. I actively participated in a volunteering event called “BMO Campus Caring Day,” where we assisted an NGO’s homeless shelter in modifying their gardens. Engaging in this event allowed me to connect with interns from different departments, fostering a sense of community and the importance of giving back to society.
